Peaky Blinders season 6 finale explained and how it sets up the movie

The final ever episode of Peaky Blinders aired last night but fans are dying for more of Tommy Shelby.

After a series of twists including Cillian Murphy's character being diagnosed with a terminal illness, shocking family revelations and more violence than you can shake a fist at, Peaky Blinders went out with a bang. Earlier in the season, Tommy was diagnosed with a terminal tuberculoma and in light of this, tied up all of his loose ends with his family and setting his illegitimate son up as his successor.

Following a trail of revelations, Tommy found out his diagnosis was a ruse, setting the show's final moments in place. Whilst viewers originally thought his son Arthur would carry his legacy forward, it appears this won't be the last time we see Tommy.

The show's creator said in 2018 there would indeed be a seventh season but has since appeared to backtrack on that statement. Screenwriter Steven Knight has said he is "keen" to continue the story of the Brummie ruffian and has already started writing the script in the form of a film adaptation. He said: "I know exactly what's going to happen, I know what the story is and I'm writing at the moment."

Though we know Cillian 's character hasn't kicked the bucket quite yet, Knight is still keeping the casting close to his chest. He said: "There are so many people, so many great actors, that we are already, sort of, in conversation with for the film, and for whatever follows. But I think what we want to do is keep surprising people, and keep breaking new talent. Because it's all out there, and there is a sort of consistency – what we're doing is finding really good actors from a working-class sort of background, and telling that story. That's what we're trying to do."

Eagle-eyed viewers also noticed uncanny similarities between the show's first and final episodes. During the opening scenes of the first series, Tommy Shelby can be seen riding into frame on the back of a black horse compared to his final scenes being on the back of a white one.

@Fergus72888383 said: "Started on a black horse foreshadowing Tommy in season 1 finished on a white horse foreshadowing the new Tommy Shelby." @TheMadridGuy13 also said: "Since season 1 till now Tommy always rode on a black horse which is his signature horse but in the final scene he rides away on a white horse to show that he has finally let go of his past. WHAT A SHOW"
