Peaky Blinders new series leaves BBC and ITV viewers facing major dilemma before first episode

The return of Peaky Blinders was causing a real stir before viewers had even watched a single second of its new episode, with the BBC show posing a huge dilemma for TV drama fans.

After a few years away, the much loved programme finally returned to screens on Sunday night, with anticipation at fever pitch for the start of series 6.

The BBC heightened excitement for Peaky Blinders comeback by confirming that the new series will be the last, with the announcer mentioning that fact before titles rolled, saying: "Some say this could be the end, but it's just getting started."

The first episode of new Peaky Blinders, which saw Cillian Murphy once again return to his famous role of Tommy Shelby, went head to head with another drama in the coveted 9pm slot on Sunday - ITV 's Trigger Point.

The tense thriller starring Line of Duty's Vicky McClure, has proved to be pretty compelling viewing since it started to great fanfare last month, so its final episode attracted plenty of interest.

But, while of course they could record one of the shows or watch on catch up, viewers found themselves torn on which one to prioritise and watch in real time, Peaky Blinders or Trigger Point, while having to avoid spoilers for the one they didn't choose.

Twitter was full of posts from fans in that predicament, with one writing: "Who thought putting the first episode of #PeakyBlinders & the last episode of #TriggerPoint on at the same time was a good idea?!"

A second reacted: "9pm clash - Final ep of Trigger Point and first of the final series of Peaky Blinders - thank god for the TiVo Box," and a third tweeted: "I can't be the only with the dilemma of Peaky Blinders or Trigger Point can I?

Speaking about Peaky Blinder's future, the show's creator, Steven Knight, told Deadline: "Covid changed our plans.

"But I can say that my plan from the beginning was to end Peaky with a movie. That is what is going to happen."
