Peaky Blinder fans 'sob' as show pays tribute to Polly actress Helen McCrory

BBC's Peaky Blinders returned for a sixth and final season tonight.

Fans were heartbroken as the show paid tribute to late actress Helen McCrory, who played Aunt Polly on the Birmingham-based drama.

Tommy (Cillian Murphy) seemed hellbent on starting a war in Boston as he put plans in place for a huge drug deal - and got Michael Gray banged up in the process.

At the beginning of the episode, viewers saw Michael grieving for his mother after her body appeared to have been delivered to Tommy's estate.

As Tommy inspected three body bags left outside his house, he broke down as he looked inside the final one and realised the consequences of his actions.

We saw Tommy Shelby break down into tears, as the camera panned to a photograph of Aunt Polly.

He later watched on in sorrow, dressed in all black as the family burnt her belongings, struggling to hold back tears.

Michael promised to take revenge on Tommy, as he said: "Mum, it was the ambitions and strategies of one man that caused this.

"And I swear in the name of almighty God, no matter what it takes, no matter how many lies I have to tell, I will take revenge on Tommy Shelby."

Fans of the show were in tears over the poignant tribute to the late actress and took to Twitter.

Gary said: "Aww Polly. Very fitting tribute."

Georgia said: "No no no not Polly I'm sobbing. Obviously I knew this would happen but my god #PeakyBlinders"

Tayler said: "I wasn’t ready for that. Goodbye Aunt Polly. #PeakyBlinders Miss you Helen."

Niall said: "R.I.P Aunt Polly. Beautiful send off to late great Helen McCrory #PeakyBlinders"

Actress Helen sadly passed away in April 2021 at the age of 52 after being diagnosed with breast cancer, before filming scenes for the final season of the show had begun.

Helen left behind her husband Damian Lewis and their two young children.

Damian announced the news, as he released a statement which said: "I'm heartbroken to announce that after a heroic battle with cancer, the beautiful and mighty woman that is Helen McCrory has died peacefully at home, surrounded by a wave of love from friends and family.

"She died as she lived. Fearlessly. God we love her and know how lucky we are to have had her in our lives."

Peaky Blinders returns to BBC One and iPlayer for series six on February 27, at 9pm
