Melania Trump recently chaired a United Nations Security Council meeting focused on children and education in conflict zones. This was the first time a world leader’s spouse has ever presided over such a meeting. The US was holding the rotating presidency of the UN Security Council for the month, and Mrs. Trump stepped into the chair role on behalf of the country.
According to BBC, during the meeting, Mrs. Trump spoke about the role education plays in “advancing tolerance and world peace.” She also offered condolences to the families of fallen US service members, saying, “Their bravery and dedication will always be remembered.”
She extended her wishes for a “swift and smooth recovery to all those who have been injured,” and added, “You are in my thoughts and prayers during these challenging times.” Mrs. Trump also said, “The US stands with all of the children throughout the world. I hope soon peace will be yours.” The announcement that she would chair this meeting had been made late the previous month.
Iran’s ambassador called out the US for hypocrisy as the meeting opened amid an active military conflict
Before the meeting even started, Iran’s ambassador to the UN, Amir Saeid Iravani, openly criticised the United States. He said “it is deeply shameful and hypocritical that on the very first day of its presidency of the Security Council, the United States convened a high-level meeting on protecting children.”
His remarks came as the US continued active military operations in Iran, with Donald Trump calling the Iran power handover a success despite significant losses on the ground. UN Under-Secretary General Rosemary DiCarlo also spoke at the meeting, noting that “when conflicts erupt, children are among those most severely affected.”

She mentioned that schools in Israel, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Bahrain, and Oman had closed and moved to remote learning due to ongoing military activity. DiCarlo also raised reports about an elementary school strike in Iran. Iranian officials claimed that a strike hit an elementary school in the town of Minab on Saturday, killing 153 people, and they blamed both the United States and Israel for the attack.

In response, the US military’s Central Command said it was investigating the reports. Israel’s military said it was “not aware” of any IDF operations in that area. Trump has also faced criticism for his reaction to three American deaths during the conflict, which many found deeply inappropriate.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated on Monday that “the United States will not deliberately target a school.” The meeting’s focus on protecting children stood in sharp contrast to the active military conflict happening at the same time, including the serious allegations of harm to children that were raised during the session itself.
