Ross 'The Boss' Montgomery says he will seek the advice of good pal and fellow part-time player Alan Soutar after joining him on the PDC Tour for the next two years.
The East Kilbride darts star secured his playing privileges at Q-School in Milton Keynes last week and faces a difficult balancing act of mixing his day job as a handyman with the expectations of playing on the professional tour.
It's a role Soutar - a fireman in Arbroath - juggled to great effect at the PDC World Championships over the festive period, reaching the fourth round on his debut and knocking out Mensur Suljovic along the way.
Now The Boss admits he has a lot to discuss with his sponsors before making his debut on the Tour next month as his day job isn't without its dangers. In 2020 Ross broke a finger while cleaning alloy wheels.
And one of his first ports of call will be Soutar, whom he won a bronze medal with at the 2015 World Cup when they were on the BDO/WDF Tour.
Montgomery told Lanarkshire Live Sport : "I'll sit and have a chat privately with Alan about things.
"He was talking to me the other day as well and he really knows what it's like [to juggle a job with the Tour].
"I'm sure he'll help me out and I'll pick a couple of other player's brains as well.
"I've been all over the world with Alan, playing for Scotland together and things like that down the years so we are good pals.
"You have to keep winning on this tour. The money is not just handed to you.
"The expense is going to be incredible and that's why I need to speak to my sponsors.
"The possibility of winning big money is there, but if you don't win games you don't get a ha'penny.
"I know for a fact one of my sponsors will tell me I need to stop hanging fences, digging this, drilling that because I need to look after my hand - and I'm not young anymore either.
"Can you imagine me saying to my sponsors I can't go on Tour this weekend because I damaged my hand putting up a fence? They would go mental.
"So it's something I'll need to look into and discuss this week.
"My day job might need to be looked at.
"I've got work coming up in February and I've got regular customers that need this and that done.
"It's something I'll need to sit down and think about because I've got to be careful. There's no point getting sponsored for lots of money and breaking your finger or putting a nail through your hand."
Being on the same tour as world champion and fellow Scot Peter Wright and former title holder Michael van Gerwin is a huge step up for the Greenhills thrower.
At the BDO World Championship, The Boss regularly struggled to get past the early rounds, with a 2015 quarter-final defeat to Martin Adams the only exception in 13 appearances.
Now the challenge is greater than ever before and he knows he will need to knuckle down to compete.
He added: "I've played Michael van Gerwin, Rob Cross and the likes and I've been hammered by them both.
"But now I'll be playing guys like that all the time, so it's about improving, working hard and I need to mentally prepare for what's ahead.
"I'll sit down and plan the year ahead, speak to my sponsors and see what lies ahead.
"I'm sure the real boss will have a word with me as well. My wife Dororthy will tell me what to do and what not to do.
"She was down at Q-School with me. She helps keep me sane, and mentally focused at these events."
Montgomery's decision to give Q-School a crack surprised many, given almost two decades of loyalty to the PDC's rival tour in the WDF and the now disbanded BDO.
"I know people have said some things about me going to the PDC, but I don't really read a lot of social media because there are a lot of armchair professionals out there who just want to troll you," he said.
"It is surprising I suppose because of my loyalty to the other field for so many years but I knew within myself the game was there.
"Everything just worked for me at Q-School.
"There's been hundreds of nice messages congratulating me and there's been some saying it must have been a bad day for me to win.
"But, at the end of the day, I don't bother with any of that.
"I just get on with it and I'm looking forward to what's ahead."
