Paul Scholes responds to being called out on Instagram for "one trick pony" Antony jibe

Paul Scholes has issued a light-hearted response after he was criticised for labelling Manchester United winger Antony a "one trick pony" in the build-up to Sunday evening's 2-1 win at Everton.

Antony and Jadon Sancho were both slammed by Scholes after Thursday night's nervy 3-2 win over Nicosia Omonia in the Europa League, with the legendary United midfielder agreeing with Erik ten Hag, who had claimed the duo were too "static" during the match.

But Scholes went further on Antony, who joined the club from Ajax in a deal that could eclipse £85million in the summer. He told BT Sport: "He was right about the wingers being static. Sancho never really runs in behind. he needs a fast left-back if he's playing on the left, he needs a striker to link with, they haven't really got that at the moment.

"Antony on the other side as well, he doesn't run in behind. He seems to be a bit of a one-trick pony. He's always cutting inside and either passing back to the full-back or having a shot. You're thinking he needs to develop a little bit. It's still early days for him, we know that."

But Scholes was left with egg on his face as Antony bagged his third Premier League goal in as many games at Goodison Park on Sunday night - a strike that saw him make club history after netting in each of his first three top-flight matches.

And Scholes went back to his previous comments with a light-hearted post on Instagram after he was dug out by fans for making the controversial remark. He shared an image of another post, which included a picture of Antony and Scholes' "one-trick pony" comment, with the caption "Whoops!"

Although Antony has struggled to make an impact in Europe for his new club, only Marcus Rashford (five) has netted more Premier League goals than the Brazilian so far this term.

His performance against Everton certainly impressed Ten Hag following his "static" comments in midweek. He told Manchester United's official website: "I was quite [confident] that he could straight away have an impact, and in the first games he has had his good moments, he had his bad moments, but I think today he played his best game so far.

"Now you see his running behind, and that is what I expect from him. Now I see his pressing, his defending is much better than in the first games and he has his dribbles, so I am happy with his performance, I am happy with his development.

"But I know there is still huge improvement and I know in the club and also in the Premier League that he needs to challenge. So he has to go every day to get out the best of him."
