Paul Scholes calls Mikel Arteta a 'disgrace' following key incident during Arsenal vs Man United

Paul Scholes has heavily criticised Mikel Arteta following Arsenal's vital win against Manchester United.

The north London outfit secured a vital three points on Saturday afternoon, overcoming United 3-1 thanks to goals from Nuno Tavares, Bukayo Saka and Granit Xhaka - a result that means they are back to fourth in the current Premier League standings. However, the match at the Emirates Stadium was filled with controversy, with both teams having a disallowed goal for offside as well as a penalty.

And Red Devils icon Scholes was left bemused by the decision to award the Gunners a spot-kick after Brazilian fullback Alex Telles appeared to bring down Saka in the first half. Speaking on Premier League Productions, the former England international said: “At the time, I thought it was offside.

“I didn’t really think of the foul, to be honest. That brings into question whether it’s a clear and obvious error, which is the only reason it should go to the VAR.

"It’s a coming together, of course, it is." Scholes then went on to lament Arsenal boss Arteta, who walked in front of referee Craig Pawson to complain before the official awarded the Spaniard's side the penalty.

Scholes added: “I think Arteta is a disgrace there. He shouldn’t be allowed to do that.

"If you see it again, he actually goes to the crowd to try and influence the referee a little. All the players around them as well.

“That shouldn’t be allowed. But it’s a little bit clumsy from Telles.”
