Paul Mescal Reveals The One Thing That Would Make Him Quit Hollywood For Good

Paul Mescal isn’t willing to put up with the dark side of fame. Instead, if things get too much for him, the Gladiator II star is happy to pack it up and ditch big-named projects in Hollywood altogether.

Speaking to British radio presenter Chris Evans on Virgin Radio, the 28-year-old revealed that he is more than happy to stop taking attention-grabbing roles in high-profile films if the pitfalls of fame become too much.

“If that becomes overwhelming, I will just stop making big films like this,” he said.

Although he’s already an A-lister to the Sally Rooney-loving girlies of the world, Mescal has just been launched even further into the fame stratosphere thanks to his role as Lucius in Gladiator II. During the interview, Evans asked Mescal whether he was prepared for the exposure — and potential lack of privacy — that a film of this size could provide.

“There’s enough information out there about how damaging this career can be to people’s fundamental life,” Mescal explained.

“So I’m not going to take a risk if it comes to that. I’m not going to push through that.”

When asked whether he had made any psychological strategies to survive the onslaught of attention brought on by Gladiator II, Mescal admitted that he found the idea of fame “boring”.

“The prospect of that is boring to me, and I’m not saying that in a kind of like self-protective way,” he said. When Evans noted that the Normal People actor came across as “measured and stable” with his resolve, Mescal disagreed jovially.

“I always laugh when people refer to me as stable because I love that I present as that. I think my team would strongly disagree with you. One of the least stable people I know is myself.

“But in the sense of well, I know that… I’ve been this mental my entire life, so I know that it’s not informed by this madness. I think I’m fundamentally mad”

“If all of this part goes away and I’m not stopped in the street, but I get to keep doing my job, I don’t care. And I mean that sincerely,” he continued.

“I love this job and if the by-product of it sometimes or a symptom of it is, is that you lose a little bit of anonymity, great. And if that becomes overwhelming, I will just stop making big films like this and I’ll do something else as long as I can get to act.”

I think I speak for all of us when I say thank god that beautiful man will continue to act on our screens.
