Paul Mescal reveals 'everybody' has been saying his name wrong as Irish actor clears it up

Paul Mescal has revealed that most people pronounce his name incorrectly and the Irish actor has placed the blame on a popular type of alcohol.

Mescal continues to see his reputation soar as he makes waves in Hollywood and his name is on everyone's lips as awards season heats up but, apparently, he's noticed a trend when it comes to people mispronouncing his surname.

The 27-year-old, who shot to stardom for his role as Connell in the pandemic favourite Normal People, explained that many people refer to him as Paul 'Mezcal', confusing his surname with the Mexican alcoholic spirit.

In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, the Kildare native said: "People get confused with how to pronounce my name because of the drink mezcal. Everybody does it it!"

Mescal joked that because of the similarity between his name and the alcohol, he might end up producing his own brand of the spirit.

The Kildare native made it clear for anyone unsure about how to pronounce his surname that it should come with a soft 'S', meaning it should be pronounced 'mess-cal'.

Mescal is in the running for Best Actor at the upcoming Academy Awards for his performance in Aftersun but he will face stiff competition from fellow Irishman Colin Farrell; as well as Brendan Fraser, Austin Butler and Bill Nighy.

Irish talent is enjoying a quite remarkable awards season, with an unprecedented 14 Oscar nominations for the upcoming ceremony, which is due to take place on March 12 in Los Angeles.

It was a disappointing night for Ireland at last night's Screen Actors Guild awards, however, as Irish talent came away empty-handed. The SAG ceremony usually acts as a precursor to how the Academy Awards will play out but only time will tell how the Irish fare at the Oscars this year.
