Paul Merson left impressed by 'outstanding' Newcastle United after rampant Leicester City win

Sky Sports pundit Paul Merson was left impressed by Newcastle United's "professional" 3-0 away win over Leicester City.

In what looked to be a potentially difficult game, Newcastle blew Brendan Rodgers side away, scoring two goals in the first seven minutes of action through Chris Wood and Miguel Almiron.

Joelinton's goal just after the half hour mark essentially put the game to bed, with Newcastle producing a professional performance in the second half to see the contest out.

It was a dream Premier League restart for Eddie Howe's side, who have now moved up to second in the table, their highest position in the table for nearly 20 years. With how Newcastle are currently performing, the Magpies look like top four contenders.

And speaking on Sky Sports News in the aftermath of the Magpies 3-0 win at the King Power Stadium, Merson hailed Newcastle's performance as "outstanding".

"Amazing. They blew them away," said Merson.

"I thought it would be a difficult game. I thought back after the break, this would be the test but they jumped out the traps and they were outstanding. They were really professional.

"They're a team. They play as a team. They all work for each other. They all know when to go when they close down, they all go. They're well drilled with some flair in the team as well and some match winners.

"They've got Leeds at home next and I expect them to beat Leeds and then all of sudden, the big game against Arsenal.

"I don't think they're going to go away. I think they're going to be right up there. I don't see them losing three games on the trot. They're a very good team."
