Paul Merson and Graham Potter agree on Kai Havertz Chelsea verdict amid bold Arsenal claim

Paul Merson and Graham Potter have both heaped great praise on Kai Havertz following Chelsea's win over Leicester City. The 23-year-old played a key role in the Blues' victory at the King Power Stadium, giving Graham Potter's side the lead in the dying embers of the first-half.

Havertz has relished a revamped false-nine role in recent weeks, despite initially struggling to shoulder the responsibility of leading the west Londoners' frontline. The Germany international has impressed so much that he was even compared to one of the Premier League's all-time greats for his strike against Leicester.

Enzo Fernandez scooped the ball over the Foxes' backline to find Havertz, who had lost his marker. Then, on the volley, he lobbed Danny Ward, leaving the goalkeeper rooted to the spot as he watched the German's effort fly overhead.

Merson was left in awe of Havertz's 'unbelievable goal'. As quoted by Football Daily, the former Arsenal midfielder told Sky Sports: "What a goal! Kai Havertz has just got an unbelievable goal of the highest level.

"The ball has come to Fernandez; Fernandez has scooped the ball over the top to Havertz… and he just lobs it over the keeper. Bergkamp-eqsue for Holland against England many years ago."

Ahead of the Leicester clash, Potter anticipated a 'top' performance from Havertz. The Blues boss said: "I have no doubt about Kai.

"He’s a top player, delivers in the big moments, gives his best for the team all the time, and runs himself into the ground. He probably benefited from playing a slightly different position [against Dortmund] but whenever you ask him to do he does his best.

"That’s a great starting point. He’s still young and he’s got all the attributes to be a top player, score goals, assists, help the team. He can be an all-around fantastic attacking player."

Havertz, who sees his contract at Stamford Bridge expire in 2025, has featured 35 times for Chelsea this season, directly contributing towards nine goals. Only recently has the forward begun to enjoy a rich vein of form so Potter will be desperate to see his talisman maintain a 'fantastic' level over the course of a season as opposed to a handful of games.
