Paul Merson and Graeme Souness disagree over Man City and Liverpool in title race

Paul Merson believes you 'write Manchester City off at your peril' in the Premier League title race after Liverpool closed the gap to the league leaders to just one point with victory at Arsenal on Wednesday night.

Goals from Diogo Jota and substitute Roberto Firmino handed the Reds a 2-0 win in their game against Champions League chasing Arsenal in North London in what was their game in hand over City.

The Reds knew a win over Arsenal would close the gap to just a point after Pep Guardiola's side dropped two points against Crystal Palace on Monday night with a goalless draw at Selhurst Park.

Former Arsenal star Merson launched a passionate defence of Guardiola's side after suggestions that momentum had swung the way of Liverpool after they closed the gap at the top to a single point: " Write Manchester City off at your peril.

"Liverpool have got to win every game, for me the situation still has not changed. Win every game and you are Premier League champions. If Manchester City win every game and draw with Liverpool they win the league. It is in Manchester City’s hands.

"You are talking about a Man City team who have won 14 games on the trot for the past three or four seasons. Everybody is celebrating the win tonight, but it’s a big celebration because it was a big win. Liverpool have to remember they are chasing down one of the best teams in world football at the moment.

"They are one point behind, this team can reel off eight wins just like that, and they can do it again. I would rather be Manchester City at the moment, because they have to come to the Etihad. If Liverpool turn up to the Etihad and play like they did in the first half, they can forget it."

Former Liverpool midfielder Graeme Souness highlighted how City opened the door for the Reds with their draw on Monday night at Selhurst Park: " On Monday, Manchester City opened the door for Liverpool, City would have been hopeful that Liverpool could have slipped up here at Arsenal because of their recent form, and they bashed through that door, and the momentum is very much with them.

"Man City could be starting to doubt themselves, they have a group of big players and this is a time for those big players to stand up in an important period."
