Paul Burrell 'emotional' as he announces cancer diagnosis on ITV's Lorraine

Paul Burrell was emotional as he announced he has been diagnosed with prostate cancer.

Princess Diana's former butler shared the health update on today's edition of Lorraine. He told the Scottish presenter was "tired" as he revealed he was diagnosed with the condition last August.

He said: "I'm on hormone therapy at the moment. It's robbing me of my testosterone so my beard isn't growing like it should. I'm tired, I'm emotional and I get hot flushes."

The 64-year-old revealed he had been diagnosed during a routine medical ahead of a TV show. He said: "Out of that came a surprisingly high PSA test. I had no idea what this was but apparently it's a chemical released by your prostate gland."

Paul visited his GP after the test, who sent him for an MRI that confirmed a shadow on his prostate. Paul said he has been on an emotional rollercoaster since the diagnosis.

He said: "Wrapping Christmas presents this year, I was thinking am I gonna do this next year. Am I gonna be here?"

Paul is keen to raise awareness of the dangers of prostate cancer as he encouraged all men to get checked. He said: "You realise that there are thousands of men like me that had no symptoms, I didn't realise what was happening and it could be too late.

"So my message is - I was lucky, I was really lucky they caught it at the beginning. Men out there can go to their GP and ask for a PSA test, men over 50 and especially if you have history in the family.

"My appeal is to all of your lovely lady viewers - you’ve got lovely husbands and sons and fathers you care about - get them to go and have this simple blood test. I don’t think men are particularly good at going to the doctors so if you love them, push them out of the door and get checked."
