The Denver Broncos appear to be ready to move on from quarterback Russell Wilson this offseason, and coach Sean Payton might already have a replacement in mind.
Paul Allen, a radio host and sports commentator for the Minnesota Vikings, was broadcasting in Denver this week and he dropped an interesting nugget on Michigan quarterback J.J. McCarthy.
“There’s just a little bit of steam that’s beginning to emerge [in Denver] that Sean Payton loves J.J. McCarthy,” Allen said on #92Noon on Wednesday. “And he’s a quarterback from a pro-style offense with a strong arm. … A pretty reliable individual informed me over the weekend that Payton is quite enamored with J.J. McCarthy.”
It’s impossible to gauge if this is credible information based on Payton’s real feelings about McCarthy. Allen isn’t making it up — somebody told it to him, but the person who told him might have inaccurate info. It’s also possible that Payton wanted this to leak as a smokescreen. Or it could be real. Welcome to draft season.
The Broncos hold pick No. 12 in the NFL draft and Payton has hinted that he might select a quarterback prospect sooner than some pundits expect.
“[I]f we like one of these guys a lot, then I’m unconcerned where people think we should draft them,” Payton said during an interview with Kay Adams on the Up & Adams show at the Super Bowl earlier this month.
The Vikings hold pick No. 11 and they might also be in the market for a QB. The 2024 NFL draft will be held in Detroit from April 25-27.
