Bailey Zappe is in at backup quarterback for the New England Patriots, and Malik Cunningham is out in Sunday’s game against the Buffalo Bills.
Cunningham was elevated to the main roster after signing a new three-year deal with the team ahead of the Patriots’ run-in with the Las Vegas Raiders last week. He was eased onto the field in a limited capacity at quarterback and receiver.
There was hope that his snaps could increase against a Bills team that has struggled against the run, but the Patriots are going in a different direction with Zappe as the No. 2 option.
New England will be shorthanded in this game with multiple players sidelined, including Josh Uche, Keion White and JuJu Smith Schuster.

The Patriots have lost the last four head-to-head games with the Bills, and they’re coming off three straight losses to the Dallas Cowboys, New Orleans Saints and Las Vegas Raiders.
Another loss for New England would put them at 1-6 and dead in the water in the AFC East division.
