New England Patriots quarterback Drake Maye is impressing veteran defenders, as the rookie is now almost a week into his first NFL training camp.
Safety Jabrill Peppers is one teammate who admitted he was impressed.
“He looks good, man. He’s getting more comfortable with the scheme, him and his guys are getting the right timing. He has exceptional arm talent,” Peppers said, via ESPN’s Mike Reiss. “We’re making it hard for him [on defense] and he’s reading it out. He’s only 21.
“He has Jacoby [Brissett] to learn from, Jacoby’s seen a lot of football, so I definitely think he has a good mentor. And Kobe has been a willing mentor for him, so I think that is the best thing about it.”
The veteran safety should be able to get a good look at Maye over the next couple of seasons.
The rookie is looking to solidify his place in a Patriots quarterback room that includes Brissett, Bailey Zappe and Joe Milton III. The development of the room itself is going to be something to watch throughout training camp.
Time will tell how far along Maye is at the NFL level, as he continues to develop under offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt. However, the real test will come during padded practices and preseason action.
