Patriots rookie Bailey Zappe ready to ‘have fun’ in preseason opener

New England Patriots rookie quarterback Bailey Zappe should see ample playing time in the team’s preseason opener against the New York Giants on Thursday.

Zappe was selected by the Patriots in the fourth round of the 2022 NFL draft. He comes to New England after having a historic 2021 season at the collegiate level. He led the FBS in passing yards with 5,545 yards and threw for 56 touchdowns, which was also an FBS record.

Throughout his college tenure, he totaled over 14,000 passing yards in five seasons—four at Houston Baptist and one at Western Kentucky.

He enters a New England quarterback room that features Mac Jones and veteran Brian Hoyer.

Jones isn’t expected to play in the preseason opener, per ESPN’s Mike Reiss. This leaves Zappe with an opportunity to show off his skill set, an opportunity he is excited for.

New England needs to build depth in the quarterback room, and Zappe could provide it. Whatever the case may be, the rookie seems ready to seize the opportunity, as he begins his journey in the NFL.
