Patriots’ rising, young offensive coach Nick Caley hired by Rams

The New England Patriots’ longest-tenured offensive assistant, Nick Caley, is taking his talents out west to join the reigning Super Bowl champion Los Angeles Rams.

Albert Breer reported the news on Sunday night.

Caley had interviewed for offensive coordinator jobs with multiple teams, including the Patriots, but according to Breer, he is being hired as the new tight ends coach for the Rams. So he will resume work with the same skilled group he coached for the Patriots since 2017.

The writing was already on the wall for Caley’s job ending in New England with his contract expiring and the Patriots hiring Will Lawing, who served as the tight ends coach for Bill O’Brien, when he was the head coach for the Houston Texans.

The Patriots are clearly allowing O’Brien to have some say over the offensive coaching staff, and from the looks of it, Caley was on the outs.

From the Rams’ perspective, they’ll be getting a fast-rising, young coach with the ability to grow and possibly even take on more responsibilities on their staff. It’s a perfect fit for a talent-rich Rams team led by a 37-year-old head coach.
