Patriots legend questioning Jerod Mayo’s coaching style

Former New England Patriots legend and Hall of Fame cornerback Ty Law spoke about the current state of the team and head coach Jerod Mayo. Specifically, Law addressed Mayo’s coaching style during an appearance on WEEI’s “The Greg Hill Show.”

Law was a key defensive contributor during his career with the Patriots. He was also on some of the best defensive units in franchise history.

He experienced Bill Belichick’s coaching style firsthand and how that coaching led to success. He noted that he isn’t seeing that same level of involvement with Mayo.

“He has to do something, other than just delegating and stay there coaching, get the stuff back through his microphone,” said Law. “You have to be an active participant, not only coaching the team, but if need be, going into that offensive huddle on the sidelines, doing those adjustments at halftime.

“If you need to get on your defense, you know what? Get off the sidelines. ‘Hey, offensive coordinator, I need to go talk to the defense because they soft as hell.'”

It’s important to note that Law is speaking based on Mayo’s post-game comments, following the loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars. Mayo called the team “soft” after they were dominated in the trenches in a 32-16 loss.

There is obviously an adjustment period right now for the team with Mayo undergoing his first season as an NFL head coach. Mayo is learning and adapting like anyone else would be doing with only seven games under his belt.

Even still, it’s hard to ignore the on-field results up to this point.
