Patriots CB Joejuan Williams expected to miss season with shoulder injury

New England Patriots cornerback Joejuan Williams has a shoulder injury that will reportedly keep him out for the rest of the 2022 season, per the NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.

It’s a disappointing turn of events for the former second-round pick of the 2019 NFL draft.

Williams was entering the fourth and final year of his rookie contract with hopes of playing his way into a more prominent role on defense and landing an extension.

However, things didn’t necessarily appear to be heading in that direction, at least not with the Patriots. Since his arrival, he has struggled to live up to his high draft stock. To be fair, the Patriots had a supremely talented defensive backfield early in his career.

But there have been opportunities for the 24-year-old cornerback to take the reins, particularly in this year’s training camp without living in the shadows of Stephon Gilmore and J.C. Jackson.

The Patriots have until 4 p.m. on Tuesday to get their roster down to 85 players. With the team currently sitting at 87 players, we’ll have to wait and see what two moves are made to get them to that number and whether Williams’ injury factors into it.
