BOSTON — Patriots cornerback Jack Jones has been arrested for attempting to bring two firearms aboard a flight at Logan International Airport, sources confirmed to the Boston Herald.
According to Massachusetts State Police, the firearms were discovered in a passenger’s carry-on luggage at a security checkpoint in Terminal B at approximately 5:30 p.m. A state trooper was called to the scene, and Jones was promptly arrested and charged with two counts of five separate offenses: possession of a concealed weapon in a secure area of an airport, possession of ammunition without a firearm identification card, unlawful possession of a firearm, carrying a loaded firearm and possession of a large-capacity feeding device.
Jones, 25, was booked at the State Police-Logan Airport barracks. His bail was set at $50,000, and he will be arraigned next week in East Boston District Court, according to state police.
The Patriots selected Jones in the fourth round of the 2022 NFL draft out of Arizona State. Jones transferred to Arizona State after a brief stop in junior college prompted by his dismissal at USC in the spring of 2018. Jones was dismissed for academic issues, and days later arrested with two others for attempting to break into a Panda Express. He was also suspended at Arizona State for violating team rules.
Character concerns caused Jones’ stock to fall last year during the draft process. His selection in the fourth round surprised many inside and around the NFL, who expected the 5-foot-11, 174-pounder would be drafted two or three rounds later or perhaps go undrafted. As a rookie, Jones started two of 13 games for the Patriots, recording two interceptions, a forced fumble and 30 tackles.
He missed the last four games of the season with a knee injury and was suspended for the final two weeks for reportedly being late to rehab sessions. According to Sports Illustrated, Patriots coach Bill Belichick addressed Jones’ suspension and lack of commitment in a team meeting, using it as a “teaching moment.”
Asked about Jones’ status with the team last week, Belichick said: “He’s still working his way back in there. It’s good to see him out there. We’ll see how that goes.”
During two minicamp practices this week, Jones worked with the starting defense in all team drills. He often started opposite first-round rookie cornerback Christian Gonzalez and/or veteran Jonathan Jones. He intercepted starting quarterback Mac Jones to start Tuesday’s practice, a possible sign of an upcoming Year 2 leap.
Asked about Jones’ arrest Friday night, a team spokesperson said: “We have been notified that Jack Jones was arrested at Logan Airport earlier today. We are in the process of gathering more information and will not be commenting further at this time.”
