Patrick Stewart's unusual December Rangers start date - and what it means

Patrick Stewart's start date as the new chief executive of Rangers has raised an eyebrow or two.

This morning, the Scottish Premiership club confirmed that the former Manchester United interim CEO would be joining to fill the role vacated by James Bisgrove in the summer.

Rangers announced that Stewart will start his job on Monday, December 16.

This has led to some discussion among supporters as to why he isn't getting stuck into the job immediately given the long wait to appoint a CEO.

Ange Postecoglou's Spurs side will visiting Glasgow on Thursday, December 12 for a Europa League tie at Ibrox and the Scottish League Cup final is scheduled for Sunday, December 15 at 3.30pm. This game will take place at Hampden Park.

And while Stewart has an unenviable task to turn things around, it may be surmised that the new man would be best placed to sweep into power with a clean slate after the team's been tested by these huge fixtures.

Upon announcing the move, interim chairman, John Gilligan, commented: “On behalf of the board, I’m delighted to welcome Patrick to the club as CEO.

“Patrick comes with an excellent reputation and background, bringing extensive experience of operating at senior levels during his 20-plus years in football.

“The board continues in discussions with several excellent candidates for the role of Chairperson and expects to make an announcement of an appointment in the coming weeks.”
