Patrick Mahomes is no stranger to the diamond.
Before the Chiefs quarterback was slinging passes on a football field, the son of a former MLB pitcher was throwing no-hitters on the mound.
Mahomes, who is minority owner for the Royals, put his skills on full display Friday evening during the Royals’ Big Slick celebrity softball game before Kansas City’s contest against the Rockies at Kauffman Stadium.
While it was a game full of high-profile personalities, the two-time Super Bowl champion left no doubt about his skillset. The 27-year-old blasted a home run, chased down a baserunner that led to an out and delivered a no-look, behind-the-back toss to first base for an out during the early innings of the game.
Mahomes’s all-around performance helped his team win the game. The proceeds from Friday’s game went to Children’s Mercy Hospital to help eliminate pediatric cancer.
The fundraiser has generated more than $17 million since 2010. Mahomes was joined by his teammate Creed Humphrey and celebrities like Dustin Colquitt, Will Forte, Joe Lo Truglio, David Cook and Al Yankovic.
But one of the stars of the show was surely Mahomes. And who knows—if he wants his athletic career to have a second act, it looks like a return to the diamond would be a natural fit.
