Patrick Bamford and Kalvin Phillips' England World Cup chances as Leeds United duo eye return

With eight months until the World Cup in Qatar, there is plenty of anticipation about who could make Gareth Southgate's final 23-man England squad. The Three Lions begin their preparations for the tournament with two friendlies this month, as Switzerland and Ivory Coast both visit Wembley Stadium.

However, no-one from Leeds United has been included in the squad for these matches. Kalvin Phillips would have surely been in the team if he had more game time under his belt, while Patrick Bamford is in a similar situation having made just four appearances since September.

Phillips has been a mainstay in the England side since making his debut in August 2020 against Denmark. He formed a superb midfield partnership with Declan Rice at Euro 2020 - playing in all seven games at the tournament.

Subsequently, the 26-year-old is the most likely Leeds player to make the final squad for the World Cup. Phillips is priced at 3/11 with Sky Bet, and only Rice and Jude Bellingham, both 1/20, are at shorter odds in his position. Jordan Henderson (3/11), Conor Gallagher (7/4) and James Ward-Prowse (7/4) are also pushing to be called up.

Meanwhile, there are a few other Leeds stars who could break into Southgate's plans by the end of the year. Bamford, who has one England cap to his name, is 5/1 on to make the camp in Qatar. But the forward has a lot of competition for his place, with the likes Ollie Watkins, Dominic Calvert-Lewin, Tammy Abraham and Harry Kane all fighting for three striker spots.

In defence, Luke Ayling is 50/1 to be selected by Southgate and could give himself half a chance if he continues to perform as he did against Wolverhampton Wanderers on Friday. The 31-year-old grabbed a goal and an assist in the Whites' sensational 3-2 comeback win at Molineux. However, 13 right-backs are more likely to be in the England squad, according to Sky Bet.

Jack Harrison (16/1), Adam Forshaw (33/1), Jamie Shackleton (33/1) and Lewis Bate (50/1) have all been priced but are all unlikely to break into the side given England's competition for places in midfield. The Three Lions have got a plethora of talent in that position - both in the senior set-up and in the youth team.

England have six more competitive fixtures before the World Cup begins in November, with Southgate set to take his side into the UEFA Nations League at the end of the season. They are scheduled to face Hungary, Italy and Germany in Group 3 and this will give the Three Lions an idea of where they are at in their progression.
