Pato O’Ward braces for “street fight” after bumpy…

Pato O'Ward and the #5 Arrow McLaren Chevrolet team endured a difficult start to the Freedom 250 Grand Prix on Saturday morning, placing 13th overall in an opening practice session defined by massive bumps, blended track surface irregularities and stifling humidity.

The 27-year-old Mexican driver set a best lap of 58.2334 seconds around the newly designed 1.7-mile, 7-turn temporary street circuit wrapping around the National Mall. O'Ward ended the session 0.8590 seconds adrift of pace-setter Kyle Kirkwood, who posted a top flyer of 57.3744s. “It's got a lot of character, man,” O’Ward said. “It's obviously a very short layout. It was exciting out there. I was looking forward to the evolution that we saw going from wets to the dry.

“Yeah, so far it's been a good session to learn quite a lot of what this track has to offer.”

Navigating the newly paved capital circuit proved to be an immediate trial for drivers and engineers alike. O'Ward emphasized that the track's severe bumps caused heavy floor strikes that disrupted gear shifts and compromised straight-line velocity.

"There's quite a few [bumps] that really throw the car into a hard limiter in the shift," O’Ward said. "That can be very damaging to the speed of the straightaway. You need to be quite aware of where to place the car."

The unforgiving surface forced several teams to re-evaluate their baseline setups almost immediately.

"We were one of the cars – I'm assuming quite a lot of other cars out there, as well – where you go out and you're like, 'Oh my God, the front is way too low,” he said. “We have to start raising the car.' The strikes were extremely aggressive."

Despite the harsh impacts, O'Ward noted one early positive: baseline grip levels were surprisingly strong across the course.

Beyond mechanical setup dilemmas, the physical toll of the venue will play a massive role over Sunday's 147-lap distance. High temperatures and humidity added to the challenge on Saturday, prompting O'Ward to immediately prioritize fluid intake.

"Physically, it's humid out there, man. We're going to lose a lot of water," said O’Ward, noting he came out of the session at his lightest post-session weigh-in of the season. "You got a bunch of sweat inside of the helmet. You're bouncing up and down in there. It gets pretty rough, gets pretty aggressive."

Despite the challenging conditions, the Arrow McLaren driver believes his conditioning will give him an edge as track conditions evolve.

"I'm ready for the street fight, man," O'Ward said. "I train really hard when I'm home and in the off-season. These situations are what I prepare myself to withstand without it degrading my performance. I expect it to be a tough race."
