Patients left dying in corridors and cancer diagnosis delays at ‘chaotic’ NHS trust

  • An investigation by The Independent and Channel 4 has uncovered whistleblower allegations that systemic care failures at the Northern Care Alliance NHS Foundation Trust have led to preventable patient deaths, delayed cancer diagnoses, and severe patient harm across Greater Manchester .
  • Clinicians and former staff warn the trust could become the next Mid Staffordshire hospital scandal, alleging that executive-led governance frequently downgrades or closes safety reports without proper investigation and creates a culture of silencing whistleblowers .
  • Specific care failures include patients dying or deteriorating during multi-day waits in overcrowded emergency department corridors, as well as reduced appointment times that resulted in missed cancer diagnoses and delayed treatments for kidney patients.
  • Despite repeated warnings sent to trust management, watchdogs such as the Care Quality Commission , and local political offices, whistleblowers report years of inaction and state that staff were bullied or driven into early retirement for raising safety concerns.
  • In response, the trust acknowledged the challenges it faces and stated it is working to address concerns by placing more clinicians in leadership positions, improving incident investigation processes, and bringing in an independent senior nurse to ensure safety.
