Passengers held at East Midlands Airport for 90 minutes after landing from Tenerife

A number of passengers were held for 90 minutes without explanation after their flight from Tenerife landed at East Midlands Airport.

Passengers were put on a transit bus after getting off a Jet2 flight from Tenerife on Saturday (February 5) evening.

They were left in the dark as to why, and one passenger told Derbyshire Live a number of them became angry at the unexplained delay and the police were called.

Passengers were on the bus for around 30 minutes before being moved to a different section of the airport, and had no idea why.

East Midlands Airport has since told Derbyshire Live there was a suspected medical incident on the flight.

A concerned passenger said: "In essence, we left the aircraft about 7pm and were loaded into the usual transit buses but remained in there for about 30 minutes with no explanation as to why.

"We were then told that for public health reasons, we were not being allowed to leave and instead were taken to a large hangar/hall at the far end of the airport.

"Many people were getting very irate and it became very volatile so the police were called to calm things down."

After another 30 minutes, the frustrated passengers were put back onto the buses and taken to passport control.

They received no explanation for the delay to their access to border control or being allowed to leave the airport.

The customer added: "After a further 30 minutes, we were loaded back onto the buses and finally allowed to pass through passport control.

"There was little information given as to why we had been detained but we finally left the airport almost 90 minutes after leaving the plane.

"And it was raining.

"I felt sorry for the junior staff trying to manage an increasingly volatile situation but the way it was handled left a lot to be desired."

A spokesperson for the airport explained that the incident was a standard procedure when there is an on board health concern.

The passengers were held in a different part of the airport until the concern had been alleviated.

An East Midlands Airport spokesperson said: "Following a suspected health incident on board an inbound passenger aircraft at the weekend, a welfare reception centre was set up to hold passengers in accordance with Public Health England requirements.

"Following a doctor's assessment, passengers were given the all clear to proceed with their onward journey."
