Pascal Gross repeats Man Utd trick as Brighton claim Old Trafford record

Brighton & Hove Albion produced one of the shock results over the opening weekend in the Premier League as they stunned Manchester United at Old Trafford.

Pascal Gross haunted the Red Devils once again with a first-half brace to put the Seagulls in a commanding position at the break. Although United pulled one back thanks to Alexis MacAllister's own-goal, Brighton held on and defended resolutely to secure their first-ever win at Old Trafford.

The Seagulls have played 16 games at the home of the Red Devils over the years but had failed to win any of those occasions before Sunday's victory. In fact, only two of the matches have ended in a draw.

But Brighton would record a famous success as Erik ten Hag got off to the worst possible start as United boss. The Seagulls fell to a 2-0 defeat in their most recent visit last season but could have easily picked up a result. They also thrashed United 4-0 back in May - meaning their latest result secures back-to-back wins over their opponents.

Gross also netted in that victory and has been a thorn in the United side over the years. The 31-year-old has scored 19 goals over the course of his Premier League career - and six of those have come against the Red Devils.

This is by far the most he has scored against any other club, with three the next highest. Gross has struck three times in matches with West Ham United - including one on the final day of last season.

Where will Brighton finish this season? Let us know in the comments below!

His first at the weekend was a typical Brighton attack, as Leandro Trossard's inch-perfect pass found Danny Welbeck in behind. The forward had a quick look before pulling the ball across the six yard box to Gross, who tucked the ball into an empty net - a goal of pure class.

The second was arguably even better as Brighton quickly countered from deep inside the own-half and the move finished with Solly March having an effort on goal. David de Gea palmed the ball out straight to Gross and he did the rest, slotting the ball into the top corner.

When asked about his record against United, he told Sky Sports: "I don't know, I would love to score more goals against other teams, but it is always against Man Utd."

On Brighton's performance, he added: "I think we played really well, the game plan was good and we managed to stick to it. I think we had our chances, was really clinical in front of goal."
