Partick Thistle eyeing up Premiership defender as Ian McCall 'makes approach'

Partick Thistle have enquired about taking St Mirren skipper Joe Shaughnessy on loan to Firhill, according to a report.

The Buddies captain hasn't featured for Stephen Robinson's side in their last three Premiership outings and the defender was linked with an exit from the Paisley outfit before the summer transfer window slammed shut. The 30-year-old had interest both north and south of the border but a move never materialised before the midnight deadline.

But the Daily Record report a transfer could happen with Ian McCall keen to take the stopper on loan to his Championship title chasers. The Jags currently occupy second spot in the league table after a solid start to the season that has them sitting with four wins, one draw and one defeat from their opening six games. Only Ayr United sit above them by one point with McCall's former employers the only remaining unbeaten team in the division.

St Mirren assistant boss Diarmuid O’Carroll played down any potential exit for the big defender after the transfer window shut. He said: "It was more the press side of things with Joe, it didn’t come from him or ourselves.

“People put two and two together when the captain isn’t in the team and then link him with somewhere else. Of course a player of his calibre is going to bring interest and coverage, but we’re delighted he’s still here.

“We had really positive conversations with Joe in the last week or so. It was never something we were encouraging to happen."

Shaughnessy played the full 90 minutes in the first three league matches but has since had to contend with a place as an unused substitute - including the 3-0 defeat to St Johnstone last time out.

Now currently out of favour, his future could feature elsewhere.
