PART of the Barras Markets in Glasgow has been renamed this weekend in honour of its founder, Margaret McIver.

The area at Suffolk Street and Ross Street is now officially called Maggie's Way in memory of Margaret, who founded the markets with her husband, James, in an effort to give those who sold out of wheelbarrows, or "barras", a place to come each Saturday and pedal their wares.

Margaret and James McIver launched the Barras Markets back in 1921.

After fears that those selling in the market, known as hawkers, could fall into ill health due to bad weather, Margaret proposed building a roof above the market.

Following the death of her husband, Margaret was left to raise nine children, forcing her to think of new ways to raise money, this only bolstered her entrepreneurial spirit.

This led to her building the Barrowland Ballroom which began as a space for hawkers to hold their Christmas dance and snowballed into becoming arguably the city's most iconic music venue, hosting everyone from David Bowie to Daft Punk.
