Parents worried children could fall into drains after grids stolen

Safety concerns have been raised after several streets have seen drain covers stolen.

Streets across Newton-le-Willows, Haydock, and St Helens have been left without covers on any of the drains by the side of the road. Residents have suggested that the grid covers have been stolen to weigh in for scrap.

The open drains raised concerns among the community due to the fear of someone falling into the hole while stepping into the road. One person said: "There were some missing in Haydock over the weekend. I reported it as it was near a school and a child could easily fall down them and seriously injure themselves."

Roads affected include Harvey Ave, Heather Brae, Winston Ave, George Street and Water Street, Redmayne Close, Acorn St, Sefton St, Clarence St, as well as several across Haydock.

Councillor for Newton-le-Willows Seve Gomez-Aspron said: "Loads of grids have been stolen around NLW and Haydock. It’s hard to tell where has been impacted, and so if your street has, make sure you report it on the link below: https://www.sthelens.gov.uk/contactus

"If you have any CCTV of who is stealing them, let us know. It’ll just come out of your Council Tax to replace them. Thanks to thieves."

A spokesperson for the St Helens Borough Council confirmed that safety officers had been out and covered any reported drains and marked them with cones.
