One dad said he discovered what had happened after taking his son to the shop on Upper Warwick Street to get some sweets after football practice.
He said: "I came out of the shop and people said did you hear a bang? I didn't hear a bang.
"The girl was lying on the floor at the bus stop. There were four of five people around here and within a couple of minutes it was crowded and crowded.
"It seemed so surreal. It didn't hit me until I got home."
One mum said she had been to the shop shortly before the shooting took place and heard about it later on the news.
She said: "It's horrible. I'm scared for my son and my daughter."
Another mum, who has lived in the area for the last six years, said she was scared to send her son to school this morning after hearing the news.
She said: "I think we need more security now because it's getting more rampant, especially in this area."
Police remain at the scene on Upper Warwick Street and on nearby roads today carrying out house-to-house, forensic and CCTV enquiries.
One woman, who lives in the area, described hearing the sound of four bangs after waking up to get ready for her night shift on Tuesday.
She said: "I thought it was fireworks. I didn't think anything of it. I was shocked when I came out on my way to work and saw this cordoned off.
"It's frightening. It was at the bus stop - you could be anywhere. I've got friends and family around here."
The woman's friend added: “I’m old enough to understand the changes around this area. I was shocked it’s a young girl but I’m not shocked that it’s a shooting."
A short time after police were called to the shooting on Tuesday, a 21 year old-man turned up at hospital with a gunshot injury to his hand, which is not life threatening.
Speaking at a press conference, Detective Chief Superintendent Mark Kameen said: "One of our lines of enquiry at this time, while keeping an open mind, is that these two incidents are connected.
"It is still, and I have to reassure everyone, very early days in this investigation, however we are working incredibly hard, late into the night and from the early hours of the morning to ensure that this investigation has the absolute traction that it definitely requires."
