Panthers training camp tracker: Observations and takeaways from Day 11

Wednesday’s first joint practice between the Carolina Panthers and New York Jets was all about the quarterbacks. (That tends to happen when you have a four-time Most Valuable Player and this year’s No. 1 overall pick on the premises.)

So, let’s take a look at them and some of the top takeaways from the morning.

Bryce Young shines

Young displayed his heralded touch, accuracy and decision-making throughout the morning. Head coach Frank Reich spoke about his rookie quarterback’s outing:

“I thought Bryce looked good today. Listen, the Jets have a really good defense—and that showed today, at times. Their defensive front is top notch. I thought Bryce handled it well. Our offense overall—it was a good day. Jets made their share of plays. Defensively, they had good rush, at times. So we have to get that cleaned up.

“I thought Bryce made good decisions. As a receiving group, I thought our spacing and distribution was good. We’ll check it out on tape, but we’ll clean up the things that we need to. I thought Bryce made good decisions and good accuracy.”

Rodgers, who has been following Young’s game for quite some time, also spoke about the 22-year-old passer:

“I like the kid a lot. We share an agent. So I’ve known him for a long time. I love watching him in college. I like his demeanor, I like his movement, I like the way he throws.

“I trust a guy like Adam [Thielen]. Him and I have been buddies for a long time, and he just raves about him. So, I think Carolina is in good hands.”

Plus, Rodgers revealed a bit of the advice he shared with Young:

“Be gentle with yourself. It’s a long journey. It feels like every little snap and practice is the end of the world if it doesn’t go right. It’s just not true. It’s a long journey. It’s about holding on to your confidence and enjoying the ride and doing the little things every day. But I think he’s got a good head on his shoulders, and he’ll be just fine.”

Bryce Young grateful for Aaron Rodgers' words

Young later shared his gratitude for Rodgers taking the time to speak with him:

“It was definitely great. It’s great being able to see him work and see him operate. That’s someone that I’ve observed and always looked at and watched for a long time growing up. So being able to watch him in person—we were on different fields, so I didn’t get to see all his reps—but being able to see the things that I was. And he came up to me before and was really nice and we had some words.”
