Panthers promote LB Chandler Wooten to active roster

The Carolina Panthers want the Woo.

In a bit of transaction news that popped up on Friday afternoon, the team has smoked one of its two remaining active roster spots on linebacker Chandler Wooten. The second-year defender now accounts as the 52nd member of the program heading into Sunday’s regular-season opener against the Atlanta Falcons.

Before breaking into the NFL as an undrafted free agent with the Arizona Cardinals, Wooten spent five years at Auburn University. There—over his four seasons of play—he recorded 139 total tackles, two interceptions and a fumble recovery in 43 outings.

Wooten was signed off the Arizona practice squad by Carolina on Oct. 18, 2022 and would later fill the active roster spot vacated by the trade of star running back Christian McCaffrey. He appeared primarily on special teams for the Panthers last season.

The 6-foot-3, 230-pounder was waived—along with quarterback Matt Corral and wide receiver Derek Wright—less than 24 hours after making the initial 2023 53-man roster last week. He signed back onto the practice squad the next day.
