The NFL has its first coaching casualty of the 2022 season. No, it’s not Dan Campbell in Detroit despite some sentiments in that direction after Sunday’s lifeless 29-0 loss to the New England Patriots.
Campbell gets a bye week to try and sort out his 1-4 Lions. The same record ended Matt Rhule’s coaching rule in Carolina. The Panthers fired Rhule on Monday after an incompetent 37-15 loss to the San Francisco 49ers.
Rhule was 11-27 in two-plus seasons in Carolina. The Panthers offense gains the fewest yards per game in the league and the young defense has been regressing from some early success.
Former Cardinals head coach Steve Wilks takes over for Rhule as the interim coach.
After Sunday’s loss, Campbell is now 4-17-1 in his Lions coaching tenure. He’d need to go 7-10 to match Rhule’s level of success.
