Panthers cut Eric Rowe, add local defender to practice squad

The Carolina Panthers announced more than just the Shaq Thompson news on Tuesday afternoon.

Along with placing the ninth-year linebacker on injured reserve, the team officially made a change to their practice squad by swapping out a couple of safeties. In is 31-year-old Matthias Farley and out is veteran Eric Rowe.

Rowe signed with the Panthers on a one-year deal this spring. Prior to what would be a short stint in Carolina, the former second-round pick chalked up eight NFL seasons between the Philadelphia Eagles, New England Patriots and Miami Dolphins.

The 6-foot-1, 205-pounder went on to play in all three of Carolina’s preseason contests this summer, totaling 99 defensive snaps out of the secondary. He would later be cut during the team’s jump to their initial 53-man roster and was then signed back to the practice squad shortly after.

Taking his spot will be Farley, a Charlotte native. He has played seven NFL seasons, making 18 starts in 100 games.
