Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas has called for an emergency session of the UN Security Council to address what the Palestinian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has described as a 'gruesome massacre' by Israel during a rescue operation in the Nuseirat camp.
The ministry's statement reported that the Israeli assault resulted in the deaths of hundreds of Palestinians and left many others wounded. President Abbas is actively engaging with various Arab and international parties to convene this urgent session of the UN Security Council.
The primary objective of the session is to discuss the ongoing Israeli aggression against the Palestinian people and to urge the Israeli occupation to adhere to international legitimacy resolutions, including those that call for an immediate ceasefire.
Over the weekend, Israel conducted a significant bombardment in central Gaza as part of an operation to rescue four hostages from the refugee camp. Gaza hospital officials have reported that more than 200 Palestinians were killed, with hundreds more sustaining injuries. The latest death toll stands at 236, according to these officials.
It is important to note that the casualty numbers provided by Palestinian officials in Gaza have not been independently verified. Medical records in the conflict-affected region do not distinguish between civilians and militants who have been killed.
