Back in 1919-20, R.D Banerji, an Archaeological Survey of India officer, rediscovered the ancient site of Mohenjo Daro, following the finding of a flint scraper. What followed next was years and years of extensive excavations led by prominent archaeologists from world over. Several decades after the initial stage of excavation, archaeologist George F Dales and hydrologist Robert L Raikes proposed a theory which stated that around 1800 BC, Indus must have flooded in a major way and wiped out a majority of the Harappan civilisation.
Mohenjo Daro was recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1980.
