A Paisley thug has been ordered to undertake work to address his domestic offending after admitting he assaulted his then partner.
Craig Baird caused “fear or alarm” on October 29 last year at a property in the town's Crags Avenue by shouting, swearing and making offensive remarks and threats towards his now ex, Anne Marie McAllister.
Baird, of Broomlands Street, turned up at the Crags Avenue property and “repeatedly” pushed Ms McAllister and seized her by her clothing.
The 27-year-old bully also repeatedly struck a bannister within the property with an axe.
Meanwhile, on April 23, 2021, Baird headbutted James Deighan in an “unprovoked attack” in the town’s Broomlands Street, while subject to a court order.
Prosecutor Amber Feeney told Paisley Sheriff Court: “Around 11.25pm on April 23, police on uniform patrol observed the accused standing slouched over a bin.
“Officers rolled down their window and asked Baird if he was okay. Upon speaking with the accused it was noted he was intoxicated but they had no concerns at that time.
“Baird then started to walk towards a flat where he passed Deighan and they had a short conversation.
“Deighan asked the accused, ‘what close do you stay in’ but this angered the accused and he headbutted Deighan to the nose.
“Officers separated the two males, handcuffed Baird and when cautioned and charged, he made no reply.”
Defence agent Ms Maitland told the court the background report that had been prepared suggested Baird undertook work to address his “domestic offending”.
Ms Maitland added: “He has been undertaking alcohol treatment and as a result, presents better. He accepts his relationship with Ms McAllister is over.”
Sentencing, Sheriff Lindsay Kooner said: “I could justifiably send you to custody today, especially for the matters regarding Ms McAllister.
“The report isn’t all bad but it is clear work still needs to be done to address your domestic offending. The other matter was a completely unprovoked attack and fortunately the complainer wasn’t injured.”
Baird was ordered to carry out a total of 270 hours of unpaid work in the community within 12 months.
In addition, he was placed under supervision of the social work department for 15 months and ordered to carry out the ‘Up to You’ domestic offending programme.
A non-harassment order was also made preventing Baird from contacting or approaching Ms McAllister, or her home address, for two years. A review hearing on Baird’s progress was assigned for September 11.
