Paisley Rugby Club suffer painful defeat to Dalziel ahead of Oban clash

Paisley were unable to back up their fine win over Clydebank after suffering a heavy defeat in Motherwell at the hands of Dalziel.

The Anchor side travelled to North Lanarkshire knowing they needed a win to stay above their opponents in the West Region League Division 2 table, with the hosts just behind them heading into the clash.

The game got off to a poor start for Paisley, with two missed tackles contributing to Dalziel picking up their first try within the opening 10 minutes.

It was duly converted, with Paisley hanging on to half-time at just 7-0 down.

Both teams were reduced to 14 men in the second half after an off-the-ball incident in the first, and Dalziel made the most of the extra space by running in their second converted try.

They picked up another score, which was unconverted, as they put some distance on the scoreboard between themselves and the visitors.

At this point Paisley did manage to rally and finally got themselves in on the action as Colin McKay crashed through the Dalziel defence from close range to touch down between the posts.

That left Euan Stuart was a straight-forward conversion which brought the scores back to 19-7, with the visitors back within touching distance.

But ten minutes later Dalziel sealed the victory with another try, this time unconverted, which took the final scoreline to 24-7.

Veteran prop Mick McCabe was awarded the man of the match award for a battling display in defence for the Paisley side.

The result saw Dalziel leapfrog Paisley into fifth position, with the Renfrewshire club slipping down to sixth in the table.

This weekend Paisley have another difficult task as they welcolme Oban Lorne to the Anchor on Saturday.

Oban currently sit in fourth in the table, five points ahead of Paisley despite having played two less games.

A Paisley Rugby Club spokesperson said: “This will be another great spectacle of rugby.

“There are only two games left at the Anchor this season, so don’t miss out and get down to support your Paisley team.”

Kick-off is at 2pm.
