The Washington Post on Wednesday announced sweeping layoffs that will significantly shrink its newsroom. The Post eliminated its sports section, large parts of its foreign coverage and its storied books division, in what current and former staff described as one of the darkest moments in the paper’s history.
The cuts, which affect nearly every department, come as the Jeff Bezos-owned newspaper struggles with falling subscriptions, shifting reader habits and mounting financial pressures facing legacy media worldwide.
