Paige Spiranac takes "4 inches" swipe at LIV golf rebel Phil Mickelson

Golf influencer Paige Spiranac has taken a brutal dig at Phil Mickleson after the LIV Golf rebel questioned the fashion choice of Sam Ryder.

The PGA Tour player competed in the Farmers Insurance Open last week sporting maroon joggers. And whilst most fans were engrossed by Max Homa holding his nerve to win by two shots, the six-time major champion was more focussed on Ryder's style choice.

The famous 'Lefty' tweeted: "The Tour doesn't allow shorts but does allow this week's leader to wear joggers with ankle socks? Showing 4 inches of ankle? "I'm no fashion guy, never will be, but there are some things I won't ever understand."

Of course, the 52-year-old's post had a wider meaning, highlighting the fact that the Saudi-backed venture which he signed up for in 2022 does permit shorts. Mickelson has been a divisive figure in the sport's civil war, regularly taking aim at the status quo despite initially labelling Saudi personnel "scary motherf*****s," later ridiculed for claiming the interview in question never took place.

And internet star Spiranac wasn't going to let him get away with his jibe scot-free. Speaking on her Playing a Round podcast, she ranted: "He was showing maybe like an inch of ankle, they weren't super tight, I thought he looked good.

"But it just shows how incredibly frustrating golf Twitter can be that they were so bothered by Sam Ryder wearing joggers. Also, if Phil thinks that's four inches, I feel sorry for his wife."

Comically, Spiranac then admitted that Mickleson's tweet had to be shown to her. The star has regularly taken aim at LIV rebels, most notably Bryson DeChambeau, leading to Mickelson blocking her on social media.

Despite the vast sums of money on offer, a number of stars have declined to sign for Greg Norman, with Tiger Woods turning down an extortionate £600 million offer. But Mickelson recently claimed the tour had exceeded expectations, despite their 2022 series yielding meagre steaming figures.

"I’m pretty surprised at how far LIV has come because there was a lot of uncertainty, like who would play in London (the first LIV event)," he told reporters. "You look at the strength of the league now and you have a lot of really strong players and you have a lot of really strong characters in the game. Whether you love them or hate them, there’s a lot of guys here that people want to see. I think there’s a lot of possibilities and I’m not sure how it’ll play out."
