Paetongtarn "Ung Ing" Shinawatra of the Pheu Thai Party is still the most popular choice for prime minister, according to the National Institute of Development Administration, or Nida Poll - although the largest percentage of people selected the answer choice 'none'.
The youngest daughter of former prime minister Thaksin was followed by Pita Limjaroenrat of the Move Forward Party, who was marginally ahead of Gen Prayut Chan-o-cha.
The third quarterly opinion survey on the political figures most suitable to be the next prime minister was carried out on Sept 15-21 by telephone interviews with 2,500 people aged 18 and over of various levels of education, occupations and incomes throughout the country.
Asked who would be their choice for prime minister today, the answers varied as follows:
• 24.16% said nobody was suitable for the post;
• 21.60% chose Ms Paetongtarn, head of the Pheu Thai family, citing their desire for a person of a new generation to have a chance to take the helm of the country's administration, along with their affinity for the Pheu Thai Party and the Shinawatra family;
• 10.56% supported Mr Pita, leader of the Move Forward Party, citing his political ideology and the party's policies;
• 10.12% were for Gen Prayut Chan-ocha, believing he was an honest and straightforward person who had led the country in peace and whose policies could actually benefit the people;
• 9.12% chose Khunying Sudarat Keyuraphan, leader of the Thai Sang Thai Party, saying they admired her past achievements and experience as well as wanting to give a woman a chance to run the country;
• 6.28% suppported Pol Gen Sereepisuth Temeeyaves, leader of the Seri Ruam Thai Party, saying he was a straightforward, honest and respectable person;
• 2.40% were for Anutin Charnvirakul, leader of the Bhumjaithai Party, saying they admired his past achievements and the party's policies;
• 2.20% chose Cholnan Srikaew, leader of the Pheu Thai Party, because he was a person of great responsibility;
• 2.16% were for Chadchart Sittipunt, the current Bangkok governor, saying he was a capable person with a strong determination to work for the people;
• 2.12% supported Korn Chatikavanij of the Chat Pattana Party, citing his expertise in economics;
• 1.92% were for Somkid Jatisripitak of the Sang Anakhot Thai Party, citing his capability and knowledge of economics;
• 1.68% chose Jurin Laksanawisit, leader of the Democrat Party, citing his past achievements and the party's policies;
• 3.12% combined supported Gen Prawit Wongsuwon (Palang Pracharath Party), Dr Warong Dechgitvigrom (Thai Pakdi Party), Kanchana Silpa-archa (Chartthaipattana Party), Mingkwan Saengsuwan (New Economics Party), Wan Muhamad Noor Matha (Prachachart Party), Mongkolkit Suksintaranond (Thai Civilised Party), Abhisit Vejjajiva (Democrat Party), Pirapan Salirathavibhaga (Ruam Thai Sang Chart Party), Tewan Liptapanlop (Chart Pattana Party), Chuan Leekpak (Democrat Party), Suchatvee Suwansawat (Democrat Party), Sirasit Lertduaylarp (Pheu Thai Party) and Wiroj Lakkhanaadisorn (Move Forward Party).
• The rest, 2.56%, had no answer or were not interested.
Asked about the political party of their choice today, 34.44% named the Pheu Thai Party; 24.00% said "none"; 13.56% the Move Forward Party; 7.56% the Democrat Party; 5.56% the Palang Pracharath Party; 3.04% the Thai Sang Thai Party; 2.56% the Seri Ruam Thai Party; 2.32% the Bhumjaithai Party; 1.00% the Chart Pattana Party; and 3.52% combined for the Sang Anakhot Thai, Kla, Chartthaipattana, Thai Pakdi, Ruam Thai Sang Chart, New Economics, Pheu Chart, Setthakij Thai, Prachachart, Action Coalition for Thailand and Thai Civilised parties.
The rest, 2.44%, had no answer or were not interested.
