Harrington hit eight pars and eagled the par-five eight hole to shoot a two-under par front nine.
And the two-time Open winner birdied holes 12 and 15 with his only blemish on the par four 16th and sits in a tie for 23rd at one-under par.
Shane Lowry also had a good day in Los Angeles as he shot a two-under-par.
Offaly man Lowry was four under par for the front nine as he charged up the leaderboard.
But the tougher back nine caught up the 2019 Claret Jug winner as he bogeyed 11,12 and 16 but did birdie the par five 14th hole and sits level par.
