Paddy McGuinness won't go to see close friend Peter Kay on stage

Paddy McGuinness has explained why he won't be watching Peter Kay's comeback tour despite them being close friends.

The Top Gear presenter revealed he was worried about his friend Peter Kay when he announced plans for the tour last year. The comedy legend announced his return to stand-up comedy after a 12 year break.

Speaking to BBC Radio 2 presenter Zoe Ball, Paddy admitted he didn't want to see his mate on tour. He said it was one of the last things on his mind.

Explaining, Paddy said: "The mad thing about this show is, he rings me up, he says, ‘I’m going on tour’. So my first thing is, ‘why? Why do that? Why put yourself…’ and he’s like, ‘I want to do it’, this, that and the other.

"Great, fair enough, each to their own, and it is very seducing when you’re on stage and people are laughing. So anyhow, he’s put this massive tour on, I come round for a cup of tea.

"So I’m round at his house, kids are out, wife’s out, it’s just me and him and a cup of tea. So he says, ‘get the laptop, I’ll talk you through stuff’.”

Peter decided to give Paddy a preview of the entire show. Paddy said: “And then he says, ‘I tell you what, I’ll do the show now’. So he’s in his slippers, jogging pants from George at Asda, T-shirt with bean juice down the front - it’s just him."

Paddy added: “I’m sat where you are to me, he’s done the full routine. I get most people saying, ‘what an experience’ - not for me.

"I’m thinking, my tea is going stone cold here. And then the ending’s amazing, it’s really extravagant, imagine that in his front room, how that played out.

“So I’m like, I’ve seen it in HD, 4K, I don’t need to do that again - so that’s it.”

Paddy added: “What I did when he put that tour on is literally turn my phone off, because anyone who has any attachment to him whatsoever, people come crawling out the woodwork and ask, ‘have you got any tickets?’”

The men became friends in high school when they both attended Mount St Joseph High School, before later working together. According to Paddy the two of them are still close and he is "very proud" of Peter.

When the tour was first announced, Paddy publicly showed his support for Peter in an Instagram post. He wrote: "I don’t often speak about Pete and his achievements on my socials. He’s been a mate since childhood and that’s how I always see him?

"Regardless of all the great things he’s achieved on television there’s literally no one who comes close to what he does live. The amount of tickets he sells is unheard of in the comedy world and beyond!

"He’s a one off folks, enjoy him, I don’t think you’ll see the likes of him again? Certainly not in our lifetime. I’m very proud of you son.

"PS I haven’t got tickets. PPS I don’t need any. #peterkay".
