With an open roster spot created by the one-game suspension given to wide receiver Romeo Doubs, the Green Bay Packers signed cornerback Robert Rochell to the 53-man roster from the practice squad ahead of Sunday’s showdown with the Los Angeles Rams.
Rochell, who is now in his fourth NFL season, has been elevated from the practice squad to the gameday roster during each of the last two weeks. He played 23 total snaps on special teams, tallying one solo tackle.
Rochell was drafted by the Rams in the fourth round of the 2021 draft. He played in 28 games with five starts for the Rams, including 11 games for the eventual Super Bowl champions in 2021.
Rochell played in nine games for the Packers last season. All 112 of his snaps came on special teams.
The Packers are dealing with injuries at cornerback. Jaire Alexander (groin) missed last week’s loss to the Minnesota Vikings after suffering a late-week injury, while Carrington Valentine (ankle) has missed back-to-back games. Both Alexander and Valentine are questionable to play Sunday. It’s unclear if Rochell’s signing has anything to do with the availability of either Alexander or Valentine.
Players can be elevated three times from the practice squad, so Rochell had one left. The Packers elevated veteran fullback Andrew Beck to the gameday roster this week, likely in response to tight end Luke Musgrave’s questionable listing.
With Rochell signed, the Packers have the following players on the roster at cornerback: Alexander, Valentine, Rochell, Keisean Nixon, Eric Stokes and Corey Ballentine.
