The Green Bay Packers are bringing back a key player on offense.
According to Tom Silverstein of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, the Packers agreed to a one-year deal with tight end Robert Tonyan.
Per Silverstein, the deal includes a void year, which will help the Packers lower Tonyan’s cap number in 2022.
Tonyan, who tied the team record for touchdown catches by a tight end (11) in 2020, played in only eight games before tearing his ACL last season. There is optimism he will be ready by the start of the regular season.
In 2021, Tonyan caught 18 passes for 204 yards and two touchdowns.
Keeping Tonyan gives the Packers a legitimate pass-catching option at tight end. He’ll re-join a group featuring Marcedes Lewis, Josiah Deguara, Dominique Dafney and Tyler Davis.
Tonyan is the second player re-signed by the Packers on Saturday. Cornerback Rasul Douglas was also retained on a new three-year deal. The team is putting to use the cap space gained by trading Davante Adams.
