Packers not revealing plan at right guard before season opener vs. Eagles

The Green Bay Packers know what they plan to do at right guard, but Matt LaFleur’s team has no interest in revealing the plan to the Philadelphia Eagles or anyone else before the season opener in Brazil on Friday.

“We have a plan,” LaFleur said Monday.

In truth, the plan at right guard can be just one of only a few options: Either Sean Rhyan starts, or first-round Jordan Morgan starts, or the Packers use a rotation of Rhyan and Morgan.

LaFleur said right guard continues to be a competition.

Rhyan appears to have taken a developmental step forward to start his third season, while Morgan was the front runner at right guard before injuring his shoulder in training camp. On the team’s unofficial depth chart, Rhyan is listed as the starter.

Last year, the Packers opened with Jon Runyan Jr. at right guard but eventually shifted into a rotation with Runyan and Rhyan to mixed results. The rotation did, however, give Rhyan valuable experience.

LaFleur said Morgan, who didn’t play in the preseason, looked good the last two days of practice. He’s also been consistently complimentary of the training camp put together by Rhyan, who played 123 snaps last year and is now in much better physical shape to start 2024.

More than likely, Rhyan will start and play the majority of the snaps. Morgan missed too much time during training camp, and the Packers probably don’t have much interest in feeding their first-round pick to the wolves along the Eagles defensive front without first getting his feet wet. But a rotation also makes sense, especially if the Packers think Morgan is ready and want to get him much-needed experience in the opener.

The other four offensive line spots are set entering Week 1: Rasheed Walker at left tackle, Elgton Jenkins at left guard, Josh Myers at center and Zach Tom at right tackle. The mystery at right guard lingers on, but an answer will arrive in four days.
