The owner of Barry Island Pleasure Park, Henry Danter, has purchased a huge "derelict" plot of land near Barry with the hope of transforming it into a holiday camp with accommodation for visitors. Since Mr Danter bought the popular tourist destination in 2015 the park is now home to one of Europe's tallest rides 'Aerospace', and with new rides coming this season, he believes that more accommodation for the parks' visitors couldn't come soon enough.
On Friday, February 10 Mr Danter purchased the 20-acre plot on the coast of Sully, which is only an 11-minute drive from Barry Island. Although he described the area as an "eyesore, derelict piece of land" he decided to purchase it as he loved the view of the sea.
With the ever-expanding pleasure park bringing in visitors from all over the world, Mr Danter says he receives around 100 calls a day asking for a place to stay - so he intends to make a start on his plans as soon as possible. The entrepreneur is not asking the council for any funding towards his project but is arranging a meeting with the local authority to start the process to gain permission to go ahead with 'Henry Danter's Holiday Camp'.
Similar to Porthcawl, the planned holiday camp will have caravans for guests to stay in as well as log cabins if given the go ahead. Visitors often need more than one day to experience the many activities on offer in Barry and the surrounding areas, requiring them to stay overnight or longer, Mr Danter said. He believes that his plans for new accommodations will bring money to the business in Barry, Cardiff and all of Wales.
