Former Manchester United midfielder Owen Hargreaves insists everyone within the club must be singing from the same hymn sheet when it comes to improving their recruitment strategy.
United, despite investing huge amounts of money in the squad in recent years, have struggled to build a squad capable of competing for silverware.
The additions of Jadon Sancho, Cristiano Ronaldo and Raphael Varane last summer meant United were hoping to end their trophy drought this season.
However, both former manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and current boss Ralf Rangnick have struggled to get United playing as a collective unit.
United's next permanent manager will be tasked with trying to galvanise the squad.
With that in mind, former United man Hargreaves has highlighted the importance of the club correcting their recruitment style, suggesting that forward-thinking has to be a priority.
"I think the biggest reason why they're behind and not going to be able to win the Champions League or the league is just recruitment," Hargreaves told BT Sport.
"Look at Man City and Liverpool - they virtually never miss. Look at the group of players they have - they have a shape, formation and a style and then they add one or two.
"I think for United, they need to get the recruitment right this summer and figure out how they want to play going forward, the style, philosophy and get one or two in.
"You look at a lot of positions and they have got a lot of great players, but it's put together by a lot of people with different ideas and I think they need to get on one page."
